Arthritis can affect anyone, but it is most typically seen in the elderly. Women suffer from the disease more than men. It is also more common in the overweight, those who smoke and those with a history of arthritis in the family. As one ages, the symptoms can become severe and suffers may need extra help completing day-to-day tasks such as walking, writing, opening medicine bottles, washing dishes, personal hygiene tasks and more.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

  • Painful/sore joints
  • Swollen joints
  • A feeling the joints are fused or stiff
  • Warm/red skin over joints
  • Popping sounds with pain in joints
  • Loss of muscle
  • Tiredness/fatigue

There is no known cure for arthritis, but treatment is available that can lessen the symptoms and suffering. Only a doctor can diagnose arthritis. Once a doctor makes the diagnosis, doctors often prescribe anti-inflammatory medicine for osteoarthritis. For rheumatoid arthritis, doctors will prescribe painkillers, special anti-rheumatic drugs and suggest physical therapy and exercise.
